Before the Season (Do This in May)

- Check your condenser tie-downs. Hurricane straps keep the unit on its pad in high winds — required by code, missing on many older installs.
- Service the system now. A failing capacitor or weak contactor won't survive storm-season power flicker. Fix weak links in May, not during a September heat wave with no power.
- Know your shutoffs. Make sure everyone in the house knows where the AC disconnect and breaker are.
When a Storm Is Coming
Turn the system off at the breaker before the power goes out. The damage window is when power flickers and surges — a running compressor caught in a brownout can be destroyed. Cool the house down ahead of landfall, then shut it off.
Don't cover the unit until winds are imminent — and if you do, use a proper breathable cover, never a tarp that traps moisture. Honestly, for most storms, the unit is safer uncovered than suffocated.
After the Storm
- Inspect before restarting. Look for debris, flooding marks, tilted pads, and damaged lines. If storm surge or floodwater reached the unit, do not start it — electrical components and motors need professional evaluation first.
- Clear debris from around the condenser. Two feet of clearance minimum for airflow.
